Cast steel is not inherently inferior. It serves a different part of the pressure and size spectrum and does that job well.

For larger bore applications, typically DN100 and above, casting is more economical than forging. The tooling cost for large forged bodies is significantly higher, and lead times run longer. Cast steel gate valves and globe valves in ASME Class 150 and Class 300 ratings cover a wide range of general industrial applications at a lower cost.

The limitation shows up at higher pressure classes and in applications involving thermal shock, vibration, or cyclic loading.
