How Does a Swing Check Valve Work?
A swing check valve — also called a non return valve — allows fluid to flow in only one direction and automatically prevents backflow when flow stops or reverses. No manual operation is required.
The hinged disc opens under forward pressure and swings back to seat under gravity and reverse pressure, protecting pumps and upstream equipment from water hammer and contamination.

Forward Flow — Disc Opens
Upstream pressure pushes against the disc. Once pressure exceeds disc weight, the disc swings open on its hinge allowing free flow.
Flow Drops — Disc Begins to Close
As flow velocity decreases toward zero, gravity pulls the disc back toward the seat to a near-closed position.
Reverse Pressure — Disc Seals Tight
Any reverse pressure immediately forces the disc against the seat ring. Backflow is blocked — pumps and upstream equipment stay protected.
Forward Flow Restores — Cycle Repeats
Once forward pressure returns, the disc swings open automatically. Fully self-resetting, no operator action required.
Which Type of Check Valve Do You Need?
Industrial check valves come in several configurations. Understanding each type helps you choose the right valve for your pipeline pressure, flow direction, and media.
Swing Check Valve
Hinged disc swings open under flow, closes by gravity on reversal. Best for horizontal pipelines at medium-to-high velocities. Low pressure drop.
Lift Check Valve
Disc moves axially along a guided stem. Compact, excellent sealing for high-pressure steam and gas service. Requires higher minimum flow.
Dual Plate Check Valve
Two spring-loaded half-discs close rapidly. Compact wafer body, fast closing reduces water hammer. Common in large-diameter pump discharge lines.
Wafer Check Valve
Slim body fits between flanges. Lightweight and space-saving. Widely used in HVAC and utility water systems.
