Y-Type Strainer
What Is a Y-Type Strainer & How Does It Work?
A Y-type strainer is an inline pipeline device that removes solid particles — rust, scale, weld slag, and other debris — from fluid systems before they reach sensitive downstream equipment. Its angled body gives it the characteristic "Y" shape and positions the filter element at an angle to the pipeline axis, allowing efficient debris collection without severely restricting flow.
Unlike basket strainers, the Y-type is compact enough for tight pipeline runs and can be installed horizontally or vertically. The stainless steel filter element is cleaned in-place or replaced during scheduled maintenance without dismantling the pipeline body.
- Compact inline installation
- Low pressure drop when clean
- Horizontal & vertical mounting
- Easy in-place screen cleaning
- Wide material & size range
- Protects pumps & instrumentation
Fluid Enters the Body
Process fluid flows into the strainer body through the inlet. The angled bore directs flow toward the stainless steel filter element at the base of the Y.
Debris Is Captured in the Screen
Fluid passes through the perforated screen. Solid particles larger than the mesh opening are trapped and retained inside the filter element — kept away from downstream equipment.
Clean Fluid Exits Through Outlet
Filtered fluid exits through the outlet connection. Pumps, valves, meters, and heat exchangers are protected from abrasive particles and blockage.
Screen Cleaned or Replaced
When pressure drop increases, the drain plug at the base is opened to flush debris out, or the screen element is removed and cleaned without removing the body from the pipeline.
Y-Type Strainer Installation & Flow Direction
Correct Y-type strainer installation orientation ensures effective debris collection and easy maintenance access. The flow direction arrow marked on the body must always align with the pipeline flow.
Horizontal — Drain Plug Facing Down
The most common installation. Gravity pulls debris to the bottom of the screen toward the drain plug, making periodic flushing straightforward without stopping the line.
Vertical — Flow Downward, Drain to Side
Acceptable when horizontal installation is not possible. Position the drain plug to the side or downward so collected debris is accessible. Confirm orientation with the flow direction arrow on the body.
Drain Plug Facing Upward
Debris collects at the bottom of the screen away from the drain plug, making flushing ineffective. Avoid this orientation in any installation — horizontal or vertical.
Y-Type vs T-Type vs Basket Strainer — Which One Do You Need?
Three common pipeline strainer configurations serve different installation and service requirements. Use this reference to specify the right type for your project.
| Criteria | Y-Type Strainer YKY Product | T-Type Strainer | Basket Strainer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body Shape | Angled Y-shape; screen at ~45° to pipe axis | Tee body; screen perpendicular to flow | Cylindrical pot body; large basket screen |
| Installation Space | Compact — fits in tight pipework | Moderate — similar to Y-type | Larger footprint — needs vertical clearance |
| Flow Orientation | Horizontal preferred; vertical downward acceptable | Horizontal or vertical | Horizontal only (standard) |
| Debris Capacity | Moderate — suited for lightly contaminated fluid | Moderate to high | High — large basket holds more debris |
| Pressure Drop | Low when clean; rises as screen fills | Low | Very low — large flow area |
| Maintenance | Drain plug flush or in-line screen removal | Screen removal in-line | Basket removal — may require shutdown |
| Typical Use | Steam, oil, water lines protecting pumps & valves | Similar to Y-type, less common | High-flow water, pump suction lines |
