Globe Valve Fundamentals

What Is a Globe Valve — and When Do You Need One?

A globe valve is a linear-motion valve that uses a movable disc and a stationary seat ring to regulate fluid flow. The S-shaped internal flow path creates a defined pressure drop and allows precise, repeatable flow regulation at any position between fully open and fully closed.

Unlike gate valves designed for isolation duty only, globe valves excel at fine throttling. Unlike ball valves limited to quarter-turn on/off, the disc can be positioned anywhere along its travel — making globe valves the standard choice for flow control loops, steam throttling, chemical dosing, and pressure-reducing service.

  • Superior throttling precision versus gate or ball valves
  • Tight metal-to-metal shut-off for steam and high-pressure service
  • Disc and seat can be re-machined in-line for easy maintenance
  • Straight, angle, and Y-pattern for different pressure-drop needs
  • Compatible with pneumatic, electric, and hydraulic actuators
  • Proven in oil & gas, steam, chemical, and pharmaceutical service

How Globe Valve Flow Control Works
1

Stem rotation → linear disc movement

Handwheel or actuator rotary input converts to vertical disc travel via threaded stem engagement.

2

Disc position sets flow area (Cv)

The annular gap between disc and seat ring controls the flow coefficient. Partial opening enables precise throttling.

3

S-path creates predictable ΔP

Engineered internal geometry makes pressure drop consistent and calculable — ideal for flow-control and pressure-reducing loops.

4

Metal or soft seat = tight shut-off

Stellite-faced seats handle steam wire-drawing. PTFE soft seats give bubble-tight shut-off in liquid service.

Product Configurations

Globe Valve Types Available from YKY

YKY supplies the full range of globe valve body patterns — including actuated versions — built to order from our factory in Zhejiang.

T
Standard Pattern
API Globe Valve →

Straight Pattern Globe Valve

The most common configuration. Inlet and outlet on the same axis — flow passes through an S-bend around the disc. Best for general throttling and flow control where moderate pressure drop is acceptable.

Corner Configuration
Enquire →

Angle Globe Valve

Inlet and outlet ports at 90° — eliminates one pipe elbow in corner runs. Reduces turbulence at direction changes. Preferred for boiler feed, drain, and steam service where space is constrained.

Y
Low Pressure Drop
Enquire →

Y-Pattern Globe Valve

Stem and seat inclined at 45°, creating a smoother flow path with lower pressure drop than straight-pattern valves. Preferred for high-pressure steam lines, slurry, and erosive media service.

Zero Fugitive Emissions
Enquire →

Bellow Seal Globe Valve

Metal bellows replaces conventional stem packing — zero fugitive emissions. Required for toxic, radioactive, or environmentally sensitive media: chlorine, ammonia synthesis, radioactive fluids.

Automated Control
Enquire →

Globe Valve with Pneumatic Actuator

Spring-return or double-acting pneumatic actuators for automated on/off or modulating control. NAMUR mounting, positioner compatible, integrates with PLC/SCADA systems.

J
Viscous Media

Jacketed Globe Valve

External jacket circulates heating or cooling medium around the valve body — prevents media solidification or condensation. Used in bitumen, polymer, and high-viscosity fluid lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Globe Valve FAQ — Technical & Sourcing

Common questions from engineers and procurement teams. Can't find your answer? Contact our team directly.

A standard globe valve is operated by handwheel for manual flow regulation. A globe control valve adds an actuator (pneumatic or electric) and positioner for automated, proportional control — often integrating with PLC/SCADA systems. YKY supplies both configurations and can retrofit actuators to manual globe bodies.

For steam service, YKY recommends WCB or WC6/WC9 bodies with Stellite-faced (STL) seats and discs. Stellite resists wire-drawing erosion caused by high-velocity steam. Expanded graphite packing outperforms PTFE above 200°C. Temperature ratings depend on pressure class — contact us for a full P-T chart.

Yes — globe valves are the preferred valve type for throttling. YKY's disc profile delivers equal-percentage or linear Cv characteristics across full stem travel, providing predictable flow curves. Avoid using gate or ball valves for throttling duties as they cause excessive seat wear and erratic control.

Standard API and GB globe valves in WCB or SS316 are typically available within 2–4 weeks for small-to-medium quantities. Large project orders with special materials or custom configurations require 6–10 weeks. Contact our sales team with your BOM and required delivery date for a firm schedule.

Yes. Our GB Globe Valve range covers PN16, PN25, PN40, PN63, and PN100 in DN10 to DN600. Full dimensional tables for each pressure class are on the product pages. ASME 150Lb, 300Lb, and 600Lb classes are available in the API range. Contact us for non-standard pressure ratings.

Every YKY globe valve ships with a test report covering hydrostatic shell test, seat tightness test, and dimensional inspection. Material test reports (EN10204 3.1 or 3.2 on request), ISO9001 quality certificate, and product-specific API or GB certificates are issued per order.

YKY has no strict minimum order quantity. We supply single-piece samples for evaluation as well as bulk project orders of 500+ valves. Pricing is tiered by volume — request a quote with your target quantity for the best pricing.
