Ball Valve Diagram Guide: Understanding Components & Internal Flow Paths

July 2, 2026

Standardized documentation is a crucial aspect of complex industrial fluid control. A ball valve diagram serves as a primary visual reference supporting design, procurement, installation, and maintenance. Engineers and procurement specialists require accurate interpretations of a Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID), for instance, to ensure component compatibility, valve construction, pressure boundaries, hydraulic requirements, and operational characteristics.

A ball valve operates using a quarter-turn rotary mechanism, where a spherical ball with a central bore either aligns with the pipeline for unrestricted flow or blocks the passage for positive shutoff. This article provides a comprehensive technical breakdown of industrial ball valve architecture through a detailed diagram and cross-section to examine internal trim, sealing mechanics, and diversion patterns through multi-port configurations.

A clear understanding of these illustrations helps minimize errors, streamline decisions, and guarantee compliance with safety standards.

External Ball Valve Components

An accurately labeled ball valve diagram identifies the external structural interfaces required for field installation, mechanical operation, and routine maintenance. These components represent the main interface among the operator, the piping system, and the internal flow control assembly.

Operating Handle

Manual ball valves typically use lever handles for smaller and standard-diameter applications. Meanwhile, larger or higher-pressure classes utilize gear operators or handwheels to match increased operating torque requirements. Most industrial designs incorporate a lockplate, position indicator, or locking provision for visual confirmation of the operating position.

The Bonnet

This houses the stem and sealing assembly while maintaining the pressure between the operating mechanism and valve body. Standard bonnets are used for general utility services where operating temperatures remain within conventional limits. Extended bonnets are designed specifically for cryogenic applications for thermal isolation or to meet MSS SP-134 standards.

End Connections

Typical industrial configurations feature flanged (raised face or ring type joint), butt weld end (BWE), and threaded (NPT or BSP) connections. Flanged dimensions and drillings follow ASME B16.5 standards for consistent pressure containment. Threaded connections are selected for smaller valve-size applications, while BWE configurations provide a permanent connection.

Internal Ball Valve Components

A ball valve cross-section reveals the high-precision internal trim and sealing interface needed for zero leakage across different industrial systems.

The Sphere

Also called the ball, this is the primary flow control component with a precision-machined bore or hole. Standard utility valves, such as the YKY 2PC series, have a floating design where the sphere is preloaded and free to move downstream under line pressure to fall against the seats. High-pressure and large-diameter applications, however, require trunnion-mounted designs with a fixed ball, like in the YKY 3PC flanged forged ball valve, for greater mechanical stability.

The Stem

This transmits rotational force from the handle to the ball. Most industrial designs feature a blowout-proof stem with an internal shoulder that prevents stem ejection due to pressure increase. Many valves also include antistatic springs to ensure electrical continuity between ball, stem, and body. This also prevents static discharge during operation, thereby reducing risks during flammable service.

Seats and Seals

Sealing integrity is maintained through the seat holders, primary and secondary seal seats, stem packing, and the stem thrust washer, among other multi-layered soft parts. PTFE is the standard for most applications, but the YKY fully welded series uses Viton seals for high temperatures and abrasive media. Metal-to-metal seating is also specified to reduce erosion.

Fully Welded Ball Valve

The Fully Welded Ball Valve is engineered for superior performance across a wide range of industrial applications.

Operational Mechanics: Flow Paths in Open VS Closed Positions

On the left, a ball valve in the open position showing unrestricted flow and, on the right, a ball valve in the closed position showing tight shut-off.

The operational efficiency of a ball valve is determined by the quarter-turn rotation from open to closed positions and vice versa.

Open Position

When the lever handle is parallel to the pipeline, the bore is aligned to the pipe axis, allowing for unrestricted passage of media. In this state, the valve functions as a straight length of pipe providing a clear path with minimal pressure drop and high flow coefficient.

Closed Position

Upon a 90-degree rotation, the solid portion of the ball faces the path to complete block media flow. In floating designs, upstream pressure forces the sphere against the downstream seat to create a pressure-assisted sealing mechanism.

Bore Geometry: Full Port VS Standard Port Diagrams

On the left, a full port configuration that has zero obstruction and is piggable. On the right, a standard port configuration that has some pressure drop and reduced actuation.

The relationship between the connecting pipe diameter and the sphere bore diameter directly impacts flow characteristics, pressure loss, and overall piping system performance, allowing engineers to determine whether a valve meets hydraulic requirements.

Full Port

In a full bore ball valve, the internal diameter of the hole closely matches the inside diameter of the pipeline. This design offers zero obstruction to reduce pressure recovery, and is mandatory for piggable lines where cleaning devices and inspection gauges must pass through the body.

Standard Port

A reduced bore ball valve is typically one pipe size smaller than the connecting line. The internal constriction results in higher fluid velocity and localized pressure drop across the valve. While this design is more economical and compact, it is limited to general industrial applications.

Visual Identification

Apart from internal bore dimensions, another difference is the body geometry. The former has a more bulbous body to accommodate a larger sphere, whereas the latter has a narrower and more tapered profile. More details on these differences can be found on the dedicated difference between a full port and a standard port valve post on the YKY blog.

3-Way Ball Valve Flow Paths

Flow routing paths when a 3-way ball valve is open for L-port versus T-port configurations.

Where standard two-way ball valves provide simple on/off isolation, three-way ball valves are designed to divert, mix, and distribute flow between multiple lines.

L-Port

Also known as a diverter, this features an L-shaped bore connecting a common inlet to two different outlet ports. Upon a quarter-turn of the handle, the valve closes one port while simultaneously opening the other, as seen in the YKY 3-way L-type flanged ball valve.

T-Port

Also called a multi-function ball valve, this incorporates a T-shaped bore allowing multiple configurations. It can connect all three ports simultaneously, divert flow to either outlet, or provide straight-through flow like a standard valve.
